Conference "Centre and Periphery in the Enlightenment" | 20-21 January 2012 |
"Centre and Periphery in the Enlightenment"
Annual Conference of the Dutch-Belgian Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies
In recent years, Enlightenment studies have moved away from a traditional national, most often Francocentric or Anglocentric focus toward a new view of the Enlightenment as an international process. New conceptual categories have emerged, including that of an international, transnational or Atlantic Enlightenment, while older categories such as the Republic of Letters have been revived. Yet these categories do not fully do justice to the power relations also underlying much Enlightenment debate, in the Low Countries and beyond. As attractive as the notion of a transnational Enlightenment may be, it obscures the unequal access to power of different participants in Enlightenment debate, not only in terms of geography but also related social, institutional, and gender identifications. | | Location: | University of Groningen | | Date(s): | 20-21 January 2012 |

CRASIS Conference "Cultures of Networks in the Ancient Mediterranean" | 9-10 February 2012 |
To further develop shared research interests, CRASIS organizes an Annual Meeting on a topic relevant for the study of cultures, religions and societies of Antiquity. A keynote speaker is invited to hold the Annual CRASIS Lecture and give a masterclass for (Research) MA and PhD students.
The first Annual Meeting and masterclass are to be held 9 &10 February 2012. The theme is Cultures of Networks in the Ancient Mediterranean and Professor Greg Woolf (St. Andrews) is this year's keynote speaker and Master.
In recent years, concepts such as Social Network Analysis and connectivity have made their way into the Humanities. The purpose of the Annual Meeting is to apply these notions to the study of cultures, religions and societes of Antiquity. A broad understanding of 'networks' allows for a wide array of topics to be analyzed from this perspective: trade and various forms of exchange of goods between cities and regions, literary networks (poets, patronage, audience), religious interaction and the spread of religious ideas, and the organisation of religious groups in society. | | Location: | University of Groningen | | Date(s): | 9-10 February 2012 |
