Young Scholar Awards

One important objective for the NGG is to lend support to the next generation of scholars of religion. Therefore, in addition to three senior scholars of religion, there are two postgraduate students on the NGG board who represent this next generation.

In 2013, the NGG has launched the Gerardus van der Leeuw Dissertation Award, which has been handed out by the NGG biennually since 2014 to distinguish PhD dissertations that have made a substantial contribution to the academic and non-confessional study of religion. The prize consists of €750,- and the opportunity to deliver the keynote lecture of that year's NGG Spring Meeting. This prize was awarded for the first time at the 2014 joint NGG/EASR/IAHR Conference in Groningen.

In 2017, the NGG launched a second prize, namely the Cornelis Tiele MA Thesis Award, which is a new annual award which was first awarded in 2018 to distinguish an excellent MA or ResMa thesis within the domain of the academic and non-confessional study of religion. The prize consists of €200,- and a free one year membership of the NGG. The deadline for submissions for the Cornelis Thiele MA Thesis Award 2019, is on 4 January 2019.

To benefit from these opportunities, the NGG encourages graduate and postgraduate students to apply for membership.
