Opening Assistant Professor Religion, Conflict and the Public Domain, University of Groningen

May 18 11

Within our complex society, the importance of academic knowledge concerning the interrelations between religion, culture and society is increasing. Perhaps now more than ever, we need specialists who can explain the meaning and background of conflicts and differences of opinion where religion plays a role - experts who know what various religions concern, who are able to defend their positions with facts and sound arguments and understand the cultural and social dynamics of religion and religious phenomena.

The Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies of the University of Groningen recently established a Research Centre for 'Religion, Conflict and the Public Domain'. The research it will engage in will focus on the contentious role of religion in the public sphere in modern Western society. The Research Centre will combine historical, philosophical, social sciences (including political science), legal, religious studies and theological approaches. Funds allocated by Sustainable Humanities (NWO) will be used by the Faculty to appoint a University Lecturer/Assistant Professor of 'Religion, Conflict and the Public Domain' for five years, who will represent the Research Centre and initiate new research concerning religion, conflict and the public domain.
